Cloud computing allows users at various locations to share software, resources, and other content without having physical possession of the materials. It also facilitates the storage of massive amounts of data that would fill the hard drives of individuals and companies. IBM reports that organizations are using the cloud to build infrastructure, but also to “build and deliver new applications, services, and business models, many of which are also tied to their mobile applications.”&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;“Cloud computing is a powerful catalyst for job creation and has greater potential for employment growth than the Internet did in its early years,” according to Job Growth in the Forecast: How Cloud Computing is Generating New Business Opportunities and Fueling Job Growth in the United States, a study by the Sand Hill Group, sponsored by enterprise application software maker SAP America, Inc. Here are some interesting statistics from the study:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Eleven cloud computing companies added 80,000 jobs in the United States in 2010, and the employment growth rate at these organizations was almost five times than that of the high-tech sector overall.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Companies selling cloud services are projected to grow revenues by an average of $20 billion per year for the next five years, which has the potential to generate as many as 472,000 jobs in the United States and abroad in the next five years.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Venture capital investments in cloud opportunities are projected to be $30 billion in the next five years, which could add another 213,000 new jobs in the United States.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;The economic impact for companies buying cloud services can be even more significant. Cloud computing could save U.S. businesses as much as $625 billion over five years, much of which could be reinvested to create new business opportunities and additional jobs.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;The field of cloud computing is growing as a result of three megatrends: the rapid increase in the number of mobile computing devices such as smartphones and tablets, the growth of “Big Data” flows that require more data management services, and the increasing use of social media. Also, demand from people who do not work in traditional office settings (such as work-from-home employees, virtual office workers, and “road warriors”) will increase demand for cloud computing services.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;So how do you land a job at a cloud computing company? Key players in the cloud computing sector include:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Amazon&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Concur&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Google&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Intuit&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Netflix&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Netsuite&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;OpenTable&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;RightNow&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Salesforce&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Success Factors&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Taleo&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;Additionally, many traditional tech giants are beginning to offer cloud services. For example, in 2010 cloud computing revenue made up 14 percent of total revenue at IBM, according to BofA Merrill Lynch Global Research. Other tech companies jumping into cloud computing include Microsoft, Oracle, AT&amp;amp;T, Cisco, Adobe, Verizon, and Symantec.
