&lt;p&gt;Most students know their alumni network exists, but few know how to actually use it. Alumni connections are one of the most effective, yet underutilized, ways to land internships and full-time roles. While job boards and online applications are still part of the process, referrals and internal advocacy continue to play a role in hiring decisions. Here’s how to tap into your alumni network, build relationships, and possibly land a great internship or job.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Start Simple&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;One of the most common mistakes students make is reaching out to alumni and immediately asking for a job. While this may work in some rare cases, it’s not the best approach (to put it lightly) and you wouldn’t want to make your alumni network feel like their only purpose is to find you work.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;A better approach is to focus on starting conversations. Alumni are generally more willing to share advice, talk about their career path and experiences, or offer insight into their company than they are to recommend someone they’ve never spoken to. Come from the mindset of “I want to learn,” and your outreach becomes more natural and more effective.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Over time, those conversations can turn into referrals, but it’s important to remember that those referrals are a byproduct, not the starting point.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Use the Tools You Already Have&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Most schools provide access to alumni directories, LinkedIn groups, or career platforms that allow you to filter graduates by industry, company, or location. The trick here is to look for alumni who work at companies you’re targeting, hold roles you’re interested in, and who graduated in the last five to&#160;10 years.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The last point is especially important because recent alumni are more likely to remember what it’s like to be in your position and may be more responsive to outreach. Keep in mind that you don’t need dozens of contacts to get started. Five to&#160;10 well-chosen connections is enough to build some good momentum.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Reach Out with a Clear, Low-Pressure Message&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Your first message doesn’t need to be long or overly polished. It just needs to be respectful of the other person’s time and clear about why you’re reaching out. To put together a strong outreach message you’ll need a brief introduction, mention of a shared connection (your university), the reason you’re reaching out, and a simple ask such as a request for a short call or some quick advice. Check out this example:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;em&gt;“Hi [Name of Contact], I’m a junior at [Your School] studying [Your Major], and I saw that you’re working at [Company Name]. I’m really interested in [Industry/Role], and I’d appreciate the chance to hear about your experience if you have 15-20 minutes to chat.”&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Prepare Like It’s an Interview&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Once someone agrees to speak with you, it’s time to get yourself prepared. While this isn’t a formal interview, it’s still a great opportunity to make an impression. As always, you can rely on your trusty research to learn about your contact’s background and their company and role. That information should help you put together a few thoughtful questions.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Here, you want to avoid generic questions like “What do you do?” Instead, try asking questions like these:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;“What surprised you most about your role when you first started?”&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;“What skills have been most important in your day-to-day work?”&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;“What would you do differently if you were in my position now?”&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;These kinds of questions lead to better conversations and will make you more memorable, which means you’ll be more likely to have additional conversations in the future.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Know When to Ask for Help&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;At some point, it’s appropriate to express interest in opportunities, but timing is incredibly important. If the conversation goes well, you can say something like:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;em&gt;“I’m planning to apply for internships/full-time roles. Do you have any advice on how to approach the process at your company?”&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;This approach keeps the ask focused on guidance rather than a direct referral. In many cases, the alumnus will offer to help, whether by reviewing your resume, pointing you to openings, or referring you internally. If they don’t, that’s fine—you’ve still gained valuable insight and expanded your network.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Following Up&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Believe it or not, it can be very easy to drop the ball when making new connections if you miss this step. After the conversation, send a short thank-you message. Once again, the goal is to keep it simple: thank them for their time, mention one or two things you found helpful, and express interest in staying in touch.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;This step is easy to overlook, but it’s what turns a one-time conversation into a longer-term connection. If you decide to apply to their company later on, it’s also completely reasonable to follow up again and let them know.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Build Relationships, Not Transactions&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;It might sound clich&#233;, but the most effective networking doesn’t feel like networking. Instead, it should feel like building relationships. This means staying in touch occasionally, which can be as simple as sharing updates, asking for advice, or even just checking in.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;You don’t need to message someone every month, but maintaining light contact over time makes future outreach feel more natural. It also increases the likelihood that someone will think of you when an opportunity comes up.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Why This Still Works&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In an era of online applications and AI-driven hiring tools, it might be easy to assume that networking is less important or that it doesn’t matter. The truth is, networking is still as powerful as it’s ever been, if not more.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Employers still rely on referrals to identify strong candidates, reduce hiring risk, and prioritize applicants. Alumni networks are one of the most accessible ways for students to tap into that system, without needing prior work experience or industry connections. The trick is, the advantage of your alumni network only works if you use it.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Your alumni network isn’t a shortcut to a job, but it’s a way to get closer to one.
