Stump the Intern! [Reader Mail]

Published:  Jun 30, 2009

Q: I graduated with my BA three years ago and am now considering going back to school. I was laid off a little less than four months ago, and, not to be a whiner, but have found the job search process grueling and grating. Prior to my layoff, I was working for a marketing firm. I’m keen on the idea of being back in academia, but not sure what kind of advanced degree I want to pursue. On the one hand, I could go for my MBA or JD, but on the other hand, there are a slew of grad programs that seem more interesting. I will say that I have definitely ruled out Med School. On top of that, I’m not sure where I should even start looking; it’s been over seven years since I first started visiting colleges and I’ve sort of forgotten how it goes. Any help?

Signed,
Ready to break out the backpack

A: Whether you’re kidding or not, a backpack is a far more ergonomic book-schlepping solution than a messenger or tote bag, so kudos on that well-made decision.  With regard to schools, one easy way to start is to decide if you are willing to relocate. If you aren’t, your options will be narrowed down, and if you are…you’re back to square one. I’d suggest visiting Vault’s Education page; there are sections for Grad, Business, and Law School, as well as other Continuing Ed options. Good luck!
