Stump the Intern! [Reader Mail]

Published:  Jun 23, 2009

Q: Until last month I was a second-year associate at a fairly big Chicago law firm. Since being laid off, however, I’m starting to feel myself pulled toward other “career paths.” Before going to law school I interned at a magazine, a newspaper, and a news website. I think I’d like to move back into media. Any tips on career changing?

Signed,
Looking for a fresh start

A: Chicago has the third largest media market in the country, so you’re already in the right location to start. It also helps that you’ve got some good media background on your resume. Furthermore, law school teaches eloquent writing and argumentative skills, both imperative to survival in the dog-eat-dog media world. As an intern, I haven’t done any career changing, but I would suggest visiting Vault’s Changing Careers page, which has a plethora of information on not only making career changes, but on buffing up your resume as well. Good luck, and please let us know the end result!
