Layoff dos and don’ts

To law firms
- Don’t be cheap with severance payouts
- Do offer generous packages
- Don’t keep staff on pins and needles
- Don’t try to pass off layoffs as performance-based cuts
(see also last year’s PR firing fiasco) - If you have to lay folks off, do it with “class”
To lawyers
- Do retain a sense of humor
- But don’t get too creative with your cover letter
- If you’re in debt, do look into renegotiating interest payments
- But don’t skip out on your law school loans
- And don’t spend your salary advance too quickly
- Do consider “rebranding” yourself for a tighter job market
