Workplaces are often structured differently from one another when it comes to career development. Some companies have rigid training and advancement programs, while others are more entrepreneurial, where you are in charge of steering your career.
If you find yourself wanting to advance your career but there aren’t strict protocols in place, you can talk to your supervisor about taking on more responsibility or challenging assignments.
Here is one way you can approach this conversation with your boss.

Manager: Hi Emily, thanks for making it to our one-on-one today. How has everything been going?
Emily: Things have been going well! I completed that project for our client on Monday, and since then have been doing some administrative work for the sales team. I felt really good about my work for our client, and I was hoping I could be of even more help on the next project, maybe taking on a few more pieces of the project. I’d also be interested in sitting in on some of the client meetings to get a better understanding of what’s accomplished on those calls and learn about different ways I can possibly support the team. I do have some time in my calendar and would love to fill it with more learning experiences so I can grow in this position.
