Vault Verdict

Haynes and Boone is a major draw for associates, largely because of its Texas charm, fantastic summer experiences, and comfortable office settings. Competitive hiring involves top law schools (especially those in Texas), top grades, and top personalities. Associates must assimilate into the welcoming work environment where people care about each other and really get to know each other. Partners foster strong relationships with associates, who they want to teach and develop into first-rate attorneys. This hands-on training is more valuable than the formal training, which feels too generalized and thus not impactful. Firm-sponsored training for lateral hires is better, as laterals feel welcomed and integrate quickly. High-level and challenging assignments, which often push associate...

About the Firm

From its roots in Dallas-area corporate securities law, Haynes Boone has expanded to 19 offices across the United States and abroad. Although much of its practice remains in the Texas corporate scene, Haynes Boone profits from its Chinese and Latin American energy deals in Shanghai and Mexico City and through international trade.

Like Teacher, Like Student

With $1,600 and a handful of small clients, Richard Haynes opened a solo law office in Dallas in 1964 while moonlighting as a securities law seminar teacher at Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law. Michael Boone joined Haynes’ office when he graduated in 1967 after impressing Haynes as a student in his classroom. The firm became Haynes and Boone, LLP, three years later. Over the next few decades, the firm rode the...

Associate Reviews

  • “Haynes and Boone’s culture is exceptional and there isn’t another firm like it. The lawyers genuinely get along so well and are also friends apart from work. There are many organic events that we have each month. The day-to-day atmosphere is great, and everyone is very respectful of each other’s time and schedule.”
  • “The culture is respectful towards everyone’s preferences, including those who leave the office early to pick up their kids and those who want to socialize and go out. That type of socialization is organic. Lawyers and staff are respectful to each other. I have become very close with my secretary and the paralegals I work with frequently and do not think that is unique to my experience.”
  • “The culture is very Texas-based, which means incredibly nice and welcoming. The lack of origination cultivates a collaborative environment that I understand does not exist at other firms.”
  • “The culture is the firm’s greatest asset: We are a group of top-notch lawyers, but everyone is a person first. There is a high degree of respect for one another, and it makes Haynes Boone a really phenomenal place to work. I love spending time with my colleagues.”

Getting Hired Here

  • “I think our firm is very competitive in terms of hiring. We draw a lot of attorneys from the top schools, especially in and around Texas. But I also appreciate that the firm finds great attorneys by plucking the top graduates from some schools that are outside of the T14.”
  • “While the firm considers hard factors such as grades and school attended in its hiring decisions, it also considers soft factors, such as interesting professional experience or personal story. The firm pours a lot of resources into finding candidates who it thinks will thrive at the firm for the long haul.”
  • “The firm looks at a combination of factors—law school, grades, clerkship experience, prior work experience, and personality.”
  • “Firm’s hiring process feels deliberate and intentional. I believe my grades and the law school I attended were very important factors; however, I feel my personality was the main reason. HB seems very focused on finding the ‘right people’ who will be a culture fit. There are specific ‘feeder schools’ that it seems are HB targets.”
