As a global law firm, we believe that we, as corporate citizens, have a responsibility to help shape the future in a way that provides economic, ecological and social benefits for all. We take pride in practicing corporate responsibility and aiding good causes and the less fortunate. We are committed to being good citizens of the communities in which we live and work. That’s why every year we donate tens of thousands of hours to pro bono matters. We actively seek community partnerships to ensure that our lawyers are available to assist where they are needed most. Our commitment to corporate responsibility is important to our clients, colleagues and local communities.

Our pro bono commitment amounts to millions of dollars in legal fees donated each year to help those who cannot pay for services. We also provide assistance to nonprofit charitable organizations, community development projects and legal service programs for the poor.

We consider pro bono hours in our annual bonus program for associates and pay some costs associated with this work. As part of our tradition of commitment to pro bono, we set expectations for pro bono recognition well above the American Bar Association’s recommendation. A few of our recent pro bono highlights are described at Pro Bono at Norton Rose Fulbright.

We recognize that our pro bono work and our practicing corporate responsibility promote our brand, make us more competitive and help grow our client relationships. In addition, such endeavors can pay dividends in the personal and professional development of our lawyers and staff members.

We support a wide range of charities in each of our offices, with a focus on supporting disabled and disadvantaged children and adults and helping them integrate into society and the business world. We periodically choose a different charity or cause to promote. In 2019-2020, our global charitable initiative is building sustainable communities. In 2017, our offices worldwide aided the Nelson Mandela Foundation, which promotes sustainable solutions to critical social problems. In 2015-2016, our charitable initiative focused on the Special Olympics, and we achieved our goal of raising $250,000 through various firm-wide and office-specific activities. Beside our periodic charitable endeavors, we also take part in ongoing global charitable initiatives, including support for The National MS Society. Each year, a team of riders from our offices around the world rides in the BP MS 150. At this event, we have won numerous awards, including Rookie Team of the Year, Second Highest Fundraising Average Per Rider and Top 25 Fundraising Team.

Our corporate responsibility was especially evident following the devastation of Hurricane Harvey in southeast Texas in 2017. We provided aid to our own workers, raising $220,000 for affected Houston employees. Many of our lawyers and support staff members pitched in at organizations that helped those in need in Houston and other southeast Texas communities. We served food to flood victims at shelters, removed damaged carpet and drywall from homes, loaded supplies onto trucks and even assisted with rescue efforts during the storm. Our lawyers also provided pro bono legal aid at Houston shelters and to those who contacted the Houston Bar Association’s LegalLine program.

Our 2021 Global Charitable Initiative focuses on fighting racism and championing social justice.
