About the Company
The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) was established in 1923 as a result of a public vote to form a publicly owned utility to provide electricity to the residents of Sacramento. SMUD began operations in 1946 and quickly built additional power generation facilities while also continuously modernizing its practices to meet growing demands. Throughout the 1980s, SMUD focused on renewable energy initiatives such as solar power, then further diversified its energy portfolio starting in the 2000s with wind, hydroelectric, and biomass power generation. SMUD’s corporate headquarters is located in Sacramento, California, and its current CEO is Paul Lau.
