Investment Banking Sales Brokers
Outlook
Employment Prospects
Employers
Sales brokers are employed by investment banks, brokerage firms, hedge funds, commercial banks, private equity groups, and stock exchanges such as the New York Stock Exchange. Opportunities are available throughout the United States, but are best in New York City, where many investment banks are located. Major investment banks include Goldman Sachs, The Blackstone Group, Centerview Partners, Evercore, Credit Suisse, and Morgan Stanley.
Starting Out
Many people break into the industry by participating in summer internships at investment banks during their junior year in college or in a two-year training program that begins after they graduate. For example, Wells Fargo offers a Corporate & Investment Banking Undergraduate Program with a program track that focuses on sales and trading. JPMorgan Chase & Co., Credit Suisse, and other investment banks offer similar programs. Check with your college’s career service office for more information or contact investment banks directly.
Advancement Prospects
Experienced sales brokers with a strong track record of generating revenue can become branch managers, who hire and fire brokers, manage the trading department, and ensure that brokers meet sales and revenue targets. Some brokers pursue opportunities as traders or work in sales at hedge funds, mutual fund companies, and other employers.
