Exploring this Job

Many casinos offer career and job fairs so individuals can learn more about opportunities in the gaming field. If you live in an area that has casinos, you might even stop by and talk to dealers to get a first hand account of the job. (But you must be at least age 21 if the casino serves alcohol, and age 18 to enter many casinos that do not sell alcohol.) Most people are happy to tell you about their job. Make sure you go at an off time so that people will have time to talk to you. You might also want to stop by the human resources department to see if it can set up an information interview with a dealer. Suggested interview questions include: What made you want to enter this career? What do you like most and least about your job? How did you train for this field? What advice would you give to young people about preparing for the field and being successful on the job?

Visit a gaming academy or dealer school and talk to the people there about the possibilities. They can give you first hand knowledge of how to get started as a dealer.

It is essential that you practice your math skills and your ability to count quickly and accurately. Any games or exercises that require the use of math ability will help you to hone your skills.

The Job

Dealers may operate various games depending on their training. Specific duties depend on the type of game they manage. Generally, no matter what game a dealer is operating, he or she ensures that players have placed bets before play begins, determines the winning players, collects player’s money or chips, calculates and pays off winning bets, and collects losing bets. Dealers monitor players to ensure that they follow casino rules. Individuals are expected to notify pit supervisors of any irregularities that arise during the game. Each dealer is responsible for overseeing and conducting the games at his or her table.

Roulette dealers sell chips to players and keep track of the value of the chips each player has on the table. They assure that all bets are on the table, spin the roulette wheel, and release the ball. Roulette dealers usually work for 40 minutes, go on break, and are replaced by another dealer. They stand during play.

Blackjack dealers assure that player’s bets are placed, and mix and deal cards to the players at the table and the house. The house is the casino and the dealer represents the house. Dealers count and tally the cards of each player, determine the correct amount of chips each winner is entitled to, and pay off winners. Blackjack dealers work in an area of the casino called the pit. There are four tables in each pit and five dealers. Dealers generally work for an hour and then take a break.

Craps dealers push dice to shooters, retrieve dice, and call the game. Craps crews are composed of two standing dealers, another dealer called the stick person, a replacement dealer, and one or two other individuals called box persons. Craps dealers usually work for 40 minutes and then go on break and are replaced by another dealer. Dealers at the craps table generally rotate positions in a counterclockwise direction. In this manner, every craps dealer at the table handles the position of the base dealer as well as the position of the stickperson.

Craps dealers are responsible for changing player’s cash into chips. The stickperson is in charge of pushing the dice to the shooter before his or her roll. The stick person is also responsible for “calling the game.” This happens when the stick person announces what each roll of the dice is as well as whether it is a winner or loser. Every stickperson has his or her own way of calling a game so that enthusiasm and excitement are generated at the table. The standing dealers handle all the place bets as well as keep track of them. Individuals additionally must remove losing bets made on the section of the craps table for which they are responsible.

Baccarat dealers, like most other dealers in casinos are expected to wear uniforms. However, the uniforms of these dealers are often tuxedos, projecting a more glamorous image. Because baccarat is a casino game which attracts high rollers, the baccarat area of a casino is often located in a separate area of the casino away from other gaming tables. Baccarat dealers cut, mix, and reshuffle the deck of cards. They receive cards and place them in appropriate boxes on the gaming table. They decide whether hands should stand, announce the winning hand after the final draw, pay off winning bets, and collect losing bets. Baccarat dealers keep records of commissions due on wagers, collecting commission when players leave the table.

No matter which casino game dealers operate, the ability to excite patrons and make the gaming experience fun is essential. Players often tip dealers when they win. The amount of the tip is dependent not only on how much players win, but often how exciting the experience was for the player.
