Education and Training Requirements

High School

A good foundation for a career as a fuel cell technician includes classes in mathematics, chemistry, physics, computer science, and shop. Communication skills are also important in this job so be sure to take English and speech classes. 

Postsecondary Education 

Most fuel cell technicians have an associate’s or bachelor's degree in engineering technology and general science. Some other majors that technicians may have degrees in include energy management and systems, biomedical technology/technician, and architectural engineering technology/technician. A few colleges—including Hocking College, Kettering University, Rensselaer Polytechnic University, Stark State College, Texas State Technical College-Waco, and Wayne State University—offer degrees or specializations in fuel cell technology. Some schools offer fuel cell technician training programs.

Other Education or Training

Fuel cell technicians continue their education throughout their careers. They attend conferences and educational events that are offered by professional groups such as the Fuel Cell & Hydrogen Energy Association and SAE International.

Certification, Licensing, and Special Requirements

Certification or Licensing

Fuel cell technicians may receive voluntary certification from the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies. Experience, Skills, and Personality Traits

Fuel cell technicians usually have several years of work experience. They receive on-the-job training. Many participate in technician training programs while in school, which can lead to offers for full-time work after graduation.

Fuel cell technicians are analytical and enjoy solving problems. They have good hand-eye coordination and are skilled at working with various materials and machinery. They are technologically savvy, and are well versed in various software programs such as computer-aided design (CAD) software and analytical and scientific software such as load simulators. Technicians are detail oriented, able to follow engineering specifications and schematics, and have strong interpersonal skills. Successful fuel cell technicians are able to work independently and as part of teams.
