A mutual fund is a professionally managed investment pool that is sold to the public through the sale of shares representing an ownership interest. Risk managers identify, study, and work to reduce risks (e.g., risky investment strategies, weaknesses in computer security) at mutual fund companies. They are also known as risk officers, chief risk officers and risk analysts. Approximately 55,290 financial risk specialists are employed in the United States; a small percentage work for mutual fund companies.
